Heritage & Legacy
1727

A City Written in Pink

Founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur was among India’s earliest planned cities. Its distinctive pink colour dates to 1876, when the city was painted in terracotta pink to welcome the Prince of Wales. The colour became so closely associated with Jaipur that the city has remained known as the Pink City ever since.

Jai Singh II was also an accomplished astronomer who commissioned the remarkable Jantar Mantar observatory. Jaipur’s original city plan was influenced by ancient Indian architectural principles and organised around a precise grid. Today, its royal palaces, astronomical instruments and historic bazaars preserve a remarkable chapter of India’s architectural and cultural history.
